Any Day Now by Neat Cubes

3 April 2026 by Obscure User

“Any Day Now” by Neat Cubes is an instrumental song that runs for 01:33. It describes itself as approximately 98BPM, in D Major, and should be classified as funky, upbeat, and positive.

The song starts with a ‘trying to realise your dreams is a struggle, rejection is hard, but i’m going to keep trying’ feel. Mid-song it shifts gears, suggesting ‘everything’s going to be alright in the end’, with maracas kicking in and a guitar melody reminiscent of the Crossroads theme song, but through a fuzz pedal.

The video was made using Remotion, which allows you to “Make videos programmatically”. Or to put it another way, “Remotion renders React components to video. Anything a browser can render — WebGL, SVG, Canvas, DOM, live data — can become a frame-accurate MP4.”

Or, to put it another way, it’s computer code-driven, but in this case the coding was handled by Claude Code, taking direction from members of Neat Cubes. The result is a combination of complex fractals, and 3D text in a 3D environment, all reacting in time to the music.

Here’s a more in-depth explanation…:

Generative music video | Remotion + WebGL + Three.js

Not AI-generated. Every frame is a React component, computed from the actual audio at 60fps.

How it was made

FRACTALS — A hand-written WebGL shader (GLSL): a Julia set with orbit-trap interior coloring, so every pixel — even the non-escaped interior — is filled with pattern rather than dark void. The c-parameter traces a multi-harmonic orbit using irrational frequency ratios (√3, π, √2, e), which means the shape never exactly repeats across the full 1:33. Bass drives zoom and brightness surges. Mids shift the orbit speed. Treble spins the UV rotation.

3D CHROME TEXT — Three.js + React Three Fiber. “NEAT CUBES / ANY / DAY / NOW” arrives in pieces: the title falls from above on the first beat, the song title assembles word by word over the opening bars via spring physics. Five coloured point lights (magenta, orange, yellow, purple, red) catch the metallic surfaces from every angle. Bloom post-processing and chromatic aberration react to the frequency data in real time.

COMPOSITING — Both visual layers were rendered separately at native resolution, then cross-faded using FFmpeg’s blend filter with a timed expression: the 3D world opens the track, fractals take over for the first main section, back and forth through the full song.

TOOLS — Remotion (React → video frames), Claude Code by Anthropic (the entire codebase, written collaboratively in one session).

Not a clue.. But it’s a nice video. If you like the song, do support indie bands by purchasing it from Bandcamp. Neat Cubes would really appreciate it.
